Japanese DVDs are Zone 2, wich covers Japan and Europe (and some
other countries). Therefore they are playable on any DVD player bought
in Europe. USA is Zone 1, so you have to check that your DVD player is able to play Zone 2 DVD.
But DVD are also encoded using the NTSC
video standard, wich is not compatible with players and television using the PAL
standard (like in France). NTSC is the standard in United-States of
America and many other countries. Please check if your equipment is
compatible with NTSC standard. This being said, most of recent video
equipment is now multi-standard and can handle NTSC without problem.
For more information on DVD standards have a look at this
DVD FAQ.
